Joe Nugent

Howth Castle – Lutyens Library

Sunday 7th June, 2.30pm-3.30pm

Joe Nugent’s expertise is on James Joyce and on technology – he has produced an iPhone app of Ulysses and a digital edition of Dubliners.  Joe will discuss James Joyce – the physical landscape and architecture of Dublin and the depiction of the physical city in Joyce’s works.

An Assistant Professor of English Literature at Boston College, Joe Nugent teaches 19th and 20th century Anglo-Irish literature, the Victorian novel, and Irish language. His research interests revolve around James Joyce (esp. Finnegans Wake), masculinity studies, Irish religious discourse, and nationalism. Joe has written articles published or forthcoming on Joyce, Irish homiletics, and on emulation and clerical training.

Originally from Ireland, Joe’s hometown is Mullingar, where James Joyce spent a couple of very important summers (1900 and 1901) while he was a university student. The town features in Ulysses and in Stephen Hero, and make odd appearances in the Wake.
